Scholarships

The University of Gothenburg administers several scholarships, which you can explore on this webpage. Some are general and others are specifically tied to subject areas, faculties, or departments.

Scholarships at the University of Gothenburg

On this page you will find scholarships that are administered by the University of Gothenburg aimed at those who study at the University.

Some scholarships can be applied for by all students and some scholarships can only be applied for by students studying a certain field of study. There may be additional requirements for eligibility, for example where you live or your hometown.

How to apply

The rules for eligibility, application, selection and decision differ between the scholarships. How to apply and other important information can be found at the respective scholarship. The application is usually made via Gothenburg University's scholarship application system.

Scholarship application system at the University

General scholarships

The general scholarships are aimed at all students at the University, regardless of subject area.

Adlerbert scholarships

The University of Gothenburg is annually allocated funds from the Adlerbertska foundations. The Scholarship Board at the University of Gothenburg are responsible for awarding grants.

Application period: 2 September - 27 September 2024.

Please note that the rules for Adlerbert scholarships are currently under review and may change for the 2024 call.

Requirements

You can receive a maximum of two scholarships on first- and second cycle level.

To be eligible for Adlerbert scholarships, you should have:

Conducted studies for two semesters at the University of Gothenburg and acquired at least 30 higher education credits at the University of Gothenburg.
A registration of at least 30 higher education credits at the University of Gothenburg during the scholarship year.
Only received the scholarship once before.

Purposes for which you may apply

Adlerbert scholarships at the University of Gothenburg awards scholarships with priority for travel abroad within the studies. You can also apply for travels within Sweden, Housing Scholarship (a contribution to your rental costs during your studies at the University of Gothenburg) and then Study Scholarship (for expenses around your studies at the University of Gothenburg).

You can apply for a Study scholarship, travel scholarship and housing scholarship in the same application. You can only receive one scholarship per application round

Selection

The scholarship funds are divided in proportion for each faculty. The pot is then divided between first- and second cycle level.

Applications for travel abroad are prioritized and ranked according to the maximum number achieved credits at the University of Gothenburg. Next priority is travel within Sweden and finally Housing Scholarship and Study Scholarship.

How to apply

Applications are made in the University's scholarship application system. The complete application must be confirmed with Swedish BankID. If you don't have Swedish BankID you can print, sign and send the application by post to: The Scholarship Board at the University of Gothenburg, Box 100, 405 30 Gothenburg, Sweden

The application should contain, per purpose:

Travel scholarship must contain information about the destination, time and purpose of the trip, as well as a cost specification. Travel to Gothenburg and travel that is less than 50 km from Gothenburg is not included. Applying for a scholarship for travel can include a maximum of two different trips. The travel may not begin before the 1 of January the same year you apply and must be completed no later than 30 of June one year afer the scholarship year (Scholarship year 1 July - 30 June).
Housing scholarship is done by filling in Rental cost per month. The scholarship is a contribution to your rental costs during your studies at the University of Gothenburg during the scholarship year.
Study scholarship is for expenses around your studies at the University of Gothenburg during the scholarship year. All applications are counted as an application for a study scholarship

Reporting of costs covered

Applicants who have received a travel scholarship must report the costs covered by the scholarship in the application system (exceptionally on a paper form which is signed and sent by post). The report shall be made latest one month after the travel or after the payment of the Scholarship is made.

Reallocation of a travel scholarship

In the event that a travel scholarship granted cannot be used for the applied travel, it is possible to apply for reallocation for another travel relevant to the studies. A scholarship can only be reallocated once. Reallocation is done when reporting the travel, marking that the travel has changed since the application date.

Remaining funds

If you have remaining funds from the scholarship after the travel(s) has been made, you can use it for living and study expenses, or for another trip relevant for your studies.

University of Gothenburg’s Student Fund

Key points

Students at the University of Gothenburg can apply for grants to develop student social life for students at the University of Gothenburg. The purpose is to provide better conditions for successful studies, contribute to good student health, strengthen university-wide cohesion between different student groups, create community across educational areas and increase the attractiveness of both the university and the city of Gothenburg.

The application is open 1 March - 31 March 2024.

Purpose

Funds from the Student Fund can be used for:

activities that welcome and include international students
activities that develop student traditions (e.g. Valborg celebrations)
activities that promote health (such as sports tournaments).
activities that stimulate students' involvement in community-building activities
social gatherings for the promotion of friendship and community.

Initiatives that contribute to increasing the attractiveness of the University of Gothenburg and collaboration with the surrounding community are encouraged.

Eligibility

Students, student associations and unions can apply for funding to implement or develop student social activities.

Funds can also be used for initiatives taken by the university to promote student social life.

Application

Grants may not pay for alcohol.

The contact person is responsible for ensuring that the purpose of the application complies with the Rules regarding the use of the University of Gothenburg's (GU) premises for parties and events and the Policy for the use of the University of Gothenburg's premises for opinion-forming activities.

Apply to the University of Gothenburg Student Fund

Decision

Applications received are handled by the review panel for the University of Gothenburg´s Student Foundation, which meets twice a year (April and October). Decisions on applications for allocation of funds are announced no later than one week later.

Applications should be submitted at least three months before the planned event. The contact person is responsible for submitting any additional information and for reporting back after the event has taken place.

If the application is granted, it must be stated before and/or in connection with the realisation of the event that funding is provided with support from the University of Gothenburg Student Foundation.

Scholarships for students at a "philosophical faculty"

The University of Gothenburg traces its origins to the Gothenburg University College, which consisted of the philosophical faculties. Scholarships are still granted to students studying at "philosophical faculties" at the University of Gothenburg, through foundations established during the College's time. This covers departments that were formerly (before 1 July 1977) part of one of the philosophical faculties:

Departments at the Faculty of Humanities
Departments at the Faculty of Science
Departments at the School of Business, Economics and Law
The following departments at the Faculty of Social Sciences: Department of Psychology, Department of Sociology and Work Science, Department of Political Science and Department of Global Studies
For the Faculty of Education, students are included in, for example, the subject of pedagogy (Teacher education is not included)

The Donation Board Scholarships

Key points

If you are a student at a department that belongs to "Faculty of Philosophy" at the University of Gothenburg, you can apply for a scholarship from the Donation Board.

The scholarship amount is SEK 10,000 or according to special regulations.

Application period: Next application period opens January 8th, 2024 to March 1st, 2024

Requirements

To be eligible for the donation board's scholarship, you qualify if you are:

registered at the "Faculty of Philosophy" at the University of Gothenburg at the time of application,
studying since at least two semesters and have obtained at least 60 credits at the "Faculty of Philosophy" at the University of Gothenburg,
an active student at the "Faculty of Philosophy" at the University of Gothenburg during the calendar year the scholarship is awarded. (As an active student, the person who studies at full or half speed is counted, ie will take a total of 30 credits during 2023),
below a total income of SEK 210 000 (2023)
a student not having received the scholarship before.

Special requirements

The Donation Board's scholarships are awarded from several foundations. Special regulations apply to some of the foundations. Applicants who meet the criteria can be given priority for dividends from the foundation, which means a higher scholarship amount.

The Ludvig and Elin Stavenow Foundation's scholarship fund awards scholarships to a student who has been a member of the Göta student union for at least one year and graduated from upper secondary school less than five years ago.

Application

The application is made in the university's application system. If your application applies to a specific foundation, it must be stated in the precedence tab. In order for your application to be complete, it should be confirmed with BankID.

Apply to the Donation Board Scholarships

Decision

Decisions are made by the Grants Committee of the Philosophical Faculties in the middle of April and will be communicated to all applicants after that.

Reporting

Students at the undergraduate and graduate level should not report costs.

Refund

If changes occur during the scholarship year that may affect the right to the scholarship, you should notify The Grants Committee of the Philosophical Faculties. If the board finds that you are no longer entitled to the scholarship, it should be refunded.
