Abstract

Starting and ending with perspectives of Totonacs from Papantla, Veracruz, the article sets about to examine and reflect upon Mexican identity formations, or rather, identity quests, historically as well as today. The voladores ritual of Totonacs serves as an example to show how the past and the present, myth and history, religion and theatre, and inummerable identities, may be condensed, dispersed, contested and negotiated as it becomes expressed, performed and read into one single event.
