Abstract

This paper presents some recent Swedish experiences of how publicly financed Internet portals are used as a means of providing guidance on educational issues. The paper analyses the role of technology, information and further support to guidance seekers, with special reference to their role in the development of quais-markets in education in Sweden. The author concludes that in quasi-markets Internet-based guidance can assume a twofold role: first as a tool for providing guidance according to traditional views; and secondly, as an electronic intermediary and market-maker. The quasi-market arrengements in Sweden cover primary, lower and upper secondary forms of education, which gives the Swedsih experiences particular values as a basis for discussing the role of Internet-based guidance in quasi-markets.
