Abstract

In our earlier work, we developed the 'field of contention' notion, proposing to account for the complexity of struggles in the housing sphere by focusing on how structural processes shape actors' positions and mutual relations, in present social struggles over housing. In this paper, we propose to take this approach one step further by applying it to a complex map of actors and relations within two fields of housing contention in East Central Europe: Bucharest and Budapest. Besides local urban processes and struggles, we trace regional and transnational processes that shape the maneuver space of local actors, as well as regional and transnational alliances built by these actors.
