The metallophyte vegetation on zink-enriched soils near the border between Germany and Belgium is briefly described. The most significant species, Viola lutea subsp. calaminaria, Minuartia verna subsp. hercynica and Armeria maritima subsp. halleri, are treated in more detail with respect to phytogeographic history and adaptations for surviving in the metal-contaminated environment. In addition, the occurrence of more common species on metal-contaminated ground and chlorotic symptoms in response to metal toxicity is discussed.
