Hybridity, proximity, dependency: Newsworkers’ changing practices in relation to proprietary and non-proprietary platforms over time

This ongoing study examines the innovation practices of a legacy news publisher’s newsworkers—namely, journalists, business managers and technologists—over four years in relation to their proprietary and non-proprietary news platforms. In doing so, it draws on two analytical frameworks: a practice lens for journalism studies (Ahva, 2017) and the agents of media innovation (Westlund & Lewis, 2014). Initial findings reveal that three themes involving hybridity, proximity and dependence have emerged. Changing practices related to these three themes feed into improving content and user-experience on the news organisation’s proprietary platforms with the objective of enhancing audience engagement, building reader loyalty and driving subscriptions. Those new practices, at the same time, may also be viewed as attempts by the news organisation at gaining autonomy from platform companies and wrestling back control over its news business.
