Abstract

The purpose of this presentation is to problematize teacher education in Turkey in light of various teacher education paradigms and research on teacher education. There have been frequent changes in teacher education programs in Turkey with an approach to increase the number of university based courses and to decrease school experience and limit to the last year in the program. In addition, the standardized tests used to hire teachers by the Ministry of Education has placed a impact toward theoretical content of subject area and pedagogical knowledge. These issues are assessed critically with a comparative look at teacher education reform efforts in several other countries.
