"Precarity as Privilege? Young Female Freelancers in the New Creative and Digital Industry"

Abstract

The 2008 financial crisis caused a substantial increase in new forms of atypical employment and for a large part of the young population the crisis also meant marginalization and exclusion from the regular and regulated labor market. Changed economic and political conditions both produce new jobs and new forms of marginalization on the labor market, leading to certain tensions on a structural level as well as on the individual level of possible gendered subject formations in relation to work. Departing from a Nordic interview- study of young workers in new forms of employments, the aim of this paper is to explore how young women, in Sweden, professionally engaged in different kind of digital creative work, form empowering strategies for independence and satisfying working conditions for themselves on a precarious labor market. Their working life is characterized by a strong idea and sense of autonomy which gives possibilities for following their creative interests but also economic and social instability. Their strategies implicate a balancing act in line with the highly individualized and competition driven climate of neoliberal entrepreneurialism on the one hand and more idea-driven incentives focusing on empowering women and ecological and social sustainability on the other. Being able to master the ideal of the gendered and passionate enterprising self is crucial in this respect. Crucial is also the ability to act according to the terms prevalent in the anticipatory economy where value is produced in terms of future expectations and potentialities. Potentialities which must be presented and marketed, which merges into the project of presenting and marketing the individual self as valuable. The strategies and measures taken are though formed by a highly individualized, gendered and precarious labor market.
