Abstract

At Valand Academy in Göteborg, Sweden, an alternative method of teaching film practice is evolving from the digital paradigm where the practice of film is taught and inspired from a concept rather than from a story. The aim is to consider how teaching film practice(s) is in a way that radicalises the curriculum so that it can function to change the pedagogic forms and strategies that are not simply about documentary and fiction filmmaking. Instead there is a direct relationship with social justice issues, gender equity and addressing democracy in civil society that is built into the curriculum. The reflexive approach allows for a reassessment of the conventions of image making, as well as addressing the normative and colonial world-view that images reproduce. It further encourages the students’ creativity as outward looking that engages directly with the world around them and how that world is informed by multiple points of view rather than the singular view of the filmmaker.
