Hypochaeris glabra is a red-listed (VU) declining herb occurring mostly as a long-established agricultural weed in SW Sweden. This paper describes the decline of Hypochaeris glabra in a coastal, sandy area in the southern part of the county of Halland, as a consequence of shifted management and abandonment of sandy, low-productive cultivated fields. Low competitive ability, annual growth habit, a seed bank of short duration, and strong dependence on rather infertile, sandy soil, all contribute to the fast rate of decline of the species. Hypochaeris glabra seems to be waning from much of North and Central Europe. A decline was also observed for other weeds, such as Raphanus raphanistrum (VU), Setaria viridis (NT) and Apera spica-venti (NT), while the thermophilous weed Echinochloa crus-galli apparently increases.
