The rapid development of information and communication technology during the last decades has radically changed the way we live our lives in many ways. While most of this progress is beneficial, there are also some worrying downsides to it. Today's children have daily access to internet, and recent statistics from Sweden indicate that there has been a drastic increase in online sexual exploitation of children during the last years. Alarmingly, new Swedish research also suggest that children who are victims of sexual abuse online suffer as many and as serious psychological consequences as children who are victims of offline abuse. This is a highly topical issue of evidently great importance for today's youth. To date, there is a lack of knowledge about the processes that surround online child sexual abuse, and about the psychological consequences for the victims. This study aim to provide increased knowledge on this topic. By analyzing Swedish court documents from 2017, we shed light on the characteristics of online child sexual abuse, who the children are, what actions it include, and how it affects the mental health of the children who are abused. Evidently, it is of great importance to gain increased knowledge about these crimes to be able to fight them, as well as being able to provide the right support for the victims.
