This text is a book review on Hans-Olof Boströms work “Carl Larsson – Monumentalmålaren”. Boström’s book is the first monography on Larsson’s work as a monumental painter and deals with the part of Larsson’s oeuvre that the artist himself deemed to be his most important. The book was written with the aim to examine Larsson’s monumental works in their European context and to understand how they relate to contemporary requirements and discourses within the field of monumental art. The author presents a thorough investigation in which he works contrastive, comparing Larsson’s work with other monumental works from his contemporary or earlier. In that way, Boström succeeds in showing influences and elective affinities, while he also elucidates the distinct character of this specific painter’s monumental works. A massive amount of different types of (archival) material is adduced to give the reader insight into Larsson’s visual and literary inspirational sources, at the same time as it supports Boström’s line of reasoning in which he critically examines Larsson’s own statements. The result of Boström’s research on Carl Larsson’s monumental works appears to be an essential book on this Swedish painter, as well as an important contribution within the research field of Swedish monumental painting from the 19th century.
