Keynote paper for the Verbier Art Summit on the topic 'Size Matters'. This paper asks what is the relationship between the scale of operation of the artist and the curator, or the artwork and the exhibition? Has the scale of the individual artwork been eclipsed by the scale of the assembly of artworks in the large scale group exhibition? If the scale of contemporary art has now exceeded the scale of individual artworks, what does this mean for artists? Some artists in the 90s who became aware of the shift in scale of contemporary art converted themselves into curators while others took on the curator by experimenting with institutional forms. How can artists, curators and critics respond to the new monumentalism of time, space and public engagement?
