Abstract

This paper discusses entrepreneurship in the Swedish music performance, specifically classical music. This study investigates how Swedish musicians in the non-profit scene accept the ‘entrepreneur’ label for themselves. The background section describes how identity work among ‘serious’ musicians has made them at least previously shun any facet related to money-making. The qualitative study performed will show that there is some remaining reluctance. However, it seems that young musicians are more willing to accept to not only view themselves as artistic entrepreneurs but also as managerial entrepreneurs. I conclude that it would be beneficial if musicians during their higher education were introduced to basic entrepreneurial skills.
