Abstract

What does education become when humans are not regarded as the only subjects? This chapter delineates an education that challenges the reduction of human-animal relations to modes of production and consumption, gesturing toward a profound reorganisation of species-coded subject positions in education and society. A foundation of this work already exists under the label “interspecies education” (Andrzejewski, Pedersen & Wicklund, 2009). In this chapter we seek to develop its philosophical/theoretical rationale and outline key themes from which critical animal education can emerge and be put to practice: 1) A theoretical basis for critical animal pedagogies; 2) The place of animals and affect in education; 3) Species-inclusive intersectionality education; 4) The animal-industrial complex in education; 5) Vegan education; 6) Critical animal pedagogies and social change.
