In this paper we investigate what we call the ‘friends of Pride’, that is, individuals and groups that are acting as direct supporters or allies of an LGBT movement, but who do not stand to directly benefit from the success of its goal accomplishment. Departing from interviews with Pride parade organizers, which interrogated their mobilizing strategies, comparisons of cases allow us to elaborate on the impact of different mobilizing contexts on the participation of LGBT allies, both elite and mass. We also highlight core dilemmas and internal conflicts in LGBT movements concerning existing or aspiring ‘friends’. Can friends be too friendly?
