Abstract

Throughout the book different aspects of and perspectives on mediatization have been introduced and discussed in order to understand the ways in which activities and interactions between organizations and media are organized and carried out. The character, impact and importance of these endeavors have been described as evident both at the level of individual organizations and specific media coverage, and in relation to general properties, values and expectations permeating how organizations and media understand, relate to and deal with each other. Thereby, the chapters share a joint ambition to ascribe media and organizations’ interests and capabilities to reflect upon and influence the specific outcomes and contexts of each other’s work as well as the institutional settings that guide, constrain and enable these efforts. In this chapter we would like to contribute to this line of reasoning by a conceptual discussion on the micro-foundations of mediatization. That is to say, a discussion where we use “institutionally bounded agency” (cf. DiMaggio 1988; Lawrence and Suddaby 2006) as a starting point for analyzing how organizations organize and perform their media activities (Pallas and Fredriksson 2011; Fredriksson and Pallas 2013). By going beyond investigations of media activities of individual organizations as a result of mediatization, we seek to challenge the common conceptualization of mediatization as a merely structural influence that is based in the autonomous status and role of media institution vis-à-vis other institutions (cf. Hartmann 2009; Hjarvard 2008).
