The purpose of this paper is to investigate the professionalization of political campaigning in the context of the 2009 European parliamentary elections. Theoretically we will focus on theories related to the professionalization of political campaigning while empirically; we will focus on the 2009 European Parliamentary election campaigns in Finland and Sweden, two countries that, despite their many similarities as societies, provide a useful contrast for theory development. The two countries differ in some key political system variables and should therefore differ in a predictable manner also in their degree of campaign professionalism.
