Issues of language correctness tend to be put in absolute terms of right or wrong, although the actual phenomena in question are often relative to their context. Hence, the task of the advising normative linguist is often to paint a more nuanced picture, and show how to take the context into account. The present paper argues that the same context dependence that concerns language use also applies to the linguistic advice as such. This point is illustrated by two examples from Swedish: run-on sentences and gender-neutral pronouns, in particular the controversial innovation hen. The first case shows that the issue is not only a question of which view one tries to argue for, but also which view one argues against. The second case concerns contrasts between usage and attitude, as well as between normative stance in the long vs. the short run.
