Abstract

The chapter investigated the transcultural dissemination and reception of the Swedish female novelist Emilie Flygare-Carlén. Starting by addressing some of the methodological problems connected to mapping the transcultural disemination of one of the most widely circulated novelist of the time,Leffler demonstrated how Scandinavian novels travelled along particular routes in Europe and the importance of being translated into German. The case of Flygare-Carlén demonstrates the importance of genre and gender at the mid- and late 19th century, and thereby also addresses some of the reasons behind today's discrepancies between a successful novelist's contemporary fame and future literary status in lietrary history.
