Abstract

The presentation at the Artistic Research Week at Oslo National Academy of the Arts, within the Nordic Artistic Research Consortium (NARC) provided a valuable venue for the articulation and communication of the research project to an audience embedded in the artistic research context. The presentation, titled “Exploring Experimental Documentary in Nanosocieties” introduced connections between the two discourses that the research centres around: documentary photography and nanotechnology. “Exploring Experimental Documentary in Nanosocieties” designated nanotechnology as a science that crosses boundaries – as an interdisciplinary technology that offers a redefinition of familiar dichotomies, such as the nature/culture distinction. The only way we can access the world on this scale is by using very specialised technological equipment – representations are our only link to these miniature landscapes. The presentation also made clear that for me – a photographer – the nano context provides an interesting analogy to photography. The nano landscapes are still fairly obscure, waiting to be exposed by the new explorers – that is: the nano scientists – similarly to how photographic representations since the camera’s invention have offered ways to, in mediated form, take part of different places and times.
