Abstract

This article presents the results of a preliminary study for a future artistic research project. The preliminary study, and the performance prepared for and given at the Uppsala conference, focused on identifying some instrumental, vocal, and interpretive questions that reflect Christian belief and piety as expressed in devotional music in a Lutheran context, specifically the songs related to the Moravian Church. This preliminary study (combining both authors’ research interests which include organology, musical performance practice, and religious expression) looked only at repertoire for voice and clavichord that could reasonably be connected directly to the Moravian Church.
