Recognition of prior learning

Since the fall of 2016, the University of Gothenburg is developing a university-wide model for recognition of prior learning. The development of the model is being made in close cooperation with the Swedish Council for Higher Education and other universities in Sweden.

On this page we will inform about the university’s ongoing work with recognition of prior learning and development of the new university-wide model.

What is recognition of prior learning?

Recognition of prior learning involves evaluating, documenting and giving recognition to an individual’s prior knowledge and skills from working life, club activities or other life experiences that may measure up to parts of course or provide qualifications.

One goal with the upcoming university-wide model is that recognition of an individual’s prior learning for a course or a program should apply regardless of university in Sweden and not just at the university where the recognition was made.

The new university-wide model, which is in place later in 2017, will further develop the procedure of recognition of prior learning at the University of Gothenburg.

Who can have their prior learning recognized at the University of Gothenburg?

Those who want to be admitted to a course or program can apply to have their prior learning recognized. For example, those who lack diplomas because of being forced to flee their homeland or have worked a long time in a profession, but lack formal qualifications.

A person can also get their prior learning recognized if already being admitted and registered as a student, but wish to receive credit based on previous studies. In this way, an ongoing education can be shortened and the student can avoid study whatever he or she already have knowledge of.

Current initiatives

At the end of June 2017, Valideringsnätverk Väst was granted SEK 8.4 million for a joint project application submitted to the Swedish Council for Higher Education earlier this spring. The project will explore and develop methods for recognition of prior learning. Among other things, this involves students who have completed their studies, but lack supporting documentation. In parallel with the development of methods, these will also be tested in real-life situations.

This is Valideringsnätverk Väst:
