About Christine Sjöberg

The Landscapes of Fashion: Locations in Contemporary Fashion Photography

Fashion photography is often associated with the decorated human body, but the genre is as much about the “spaces” in which this body acts. The point of departure for my thesis is a re-organized mise-en-scène analysis, where the spaces and places – the milieus surrounding the fashioned body – are put at the centre and seen as co-actors instead of mere backdrops. My interest lies in how representations of fashion, through selection and representation of different locations, construct scenes and sceneries for the beholder’s fantasies and associations, as well as for fashion’s own agendas. How do different “types” of fashion imagery communicate certain values by use of diverse locations? How are locations used in relation to “visualized identities” and different trends and tendencies? A wider perspective is that of the interplay between fashion and photographic and digital image making, and how fashion images are parts of visual cultures in constant negotiation, affected by technical transitions and altered interfaces.
