About Aksel Sundström

Associate professor (docent).

Sundström has two major research interests; 1) the relationship between corruption and effective environmental politics, especially in low-income countries, and 2) the study of political representation, focusing on the absence of women and youth in political institutions (such as parliaments, cabinets, and local councils).

He works partly with a project studying nature reserves that extend across national borders in southern Africa. The project investigates how transnational institutions create opportunities and challenges to reduce behaviors such as poaching.

Funded from the Swedish Research Council for the projects; “Corruption in Natural Resource Management” (main applicant), “Climate Change and the Prospects for Economic Growth” (with Martin Sjöstedt, Sverker C. Jagers and Pelle Ahlerup), “The Logics of Collective Action in Transnationally Protected Reserves” (with Sverker C. Jagers and Martin Sjöstedt).

Conducted a year-long research stay in 2017-2018 at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, supported by the Swedish Research Council's international postdoc program.

Sundström's research has been published in a range of outlets, including, European Journal of Political Research, Governance, Party Politics and Public Administration.
