Main Research

Cardivascular prevention with focus on hypertension. Registry- and cohortstudies on hypertension and related diseases.

High blood pressure (hypertension), the most significant risk factor for death worldwide according to WHO is the main focus for our research. Despite cost-effective drugs, the majority of individuals with hypertension are still not well-treated. At present we study hypertension and its complications via two large registers created within the framework of primary health care in Sweden. In the Swedish Primary Care Cardiovascular Database (SPCCD) (n = 74751, mean age 69 +/- 13 years, 56% women) individual clinical patient data from 48 medical centers in patients with high blood pressure (collected from 2001 to 2008 with follow-up to 2013) are linked to the Medical register, National Board of the patient - and the cause of death records and Statistics Sweden's population register. Another large register, QRegPV , (Primary Care in the region of Västra Götaland) has a similar structure with linkage to national registers. Our scientific questions at present include how cardiovascular morbidity in men and women with hypertension is affected by the type of treatment and achieved blood pressure. In particular we focus on the effect of hypertension and its treatment on fractures, stroke, atrial fibrillation, diabetes and metabolic disturbances. Finally we study patients with severe hypertension (resistant hypertension).
