About Helena Wattström

I am a lecturer in Music Education and have worked at HSM since the 1990s. I started working as a methodology teacher at the I/E training, but have actually worked mostly at the Rhythmic Teacher programe.

I myself am a trained rhythmic teacher at the Royal Academy of Music 79-83 and I have worked as a teacher since then, both at HSM but also in elementary schools and cultural schools. I built up the eurythmics in Partille municipality during the early 90s and have been workning as a music teacher in Partille in parallel with working at HSM. In Partille, I have also worked with the special school and I started the orchestra RAMSEBAND in the early 90s, which is an Orchestra in specialschool. We had great success in the early 2000s when we went on four Japan tours and we inaugurated the Year of the Disabled in Brussels in 2003 among many other great experiences.

For many years, I have been unit manager for the music teacher education and I am really passionate about the music teaching profession. I see such a great opportunity to get children and young people to see music as an extra value in life, whether they will deal with the subject professionally or as a leisure activity. Right now, I am responsible for initiatives CULTURAL SCHOOL TEACHER TRAINING

When I'm not working at HSM, I work for an organization called Motivationslyftet by Star for Life. That organization also works with value-based work and has its origins in South Africa. This means working with primary and secondary schools to actively raise awareness of goals, dreams, the opportunity to make one's own choices, etc.... We have developed a teaching material called Motivationslyftet where aesthetic learning processes run as a common thread throughout the material.

HSM also collaborates with STAR for LIFE in South Africa. The third year music teacher students have the opportunity to go down to Hluhluwe and Durban in South Africa to do their internship. This is made possible through Adlebert scholarships. Absolutely fantastic to be able to contribute to students having such a great experience both personally and as future teachers.
