About Johan Stern

Johan Stern is principal cello of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, The National Orchestra of Sweden and in the Academy of Music & Drama of Gothenburg University he teaches cello, chamber-music and orchestral performance. During his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City he collaborated and recorded with iconic composers such as John Cage and Elliott Carter and he performed in prestigious festivals in Tanglewood, Lincoln Center and MoMA. As a member of the Gageego!-ensemble he has premiered numerous soloworks by important European composers and as a soloist and chamber-music player he has collaborated with star performers such as Bobby McFerrin, Edward Gardner, Kristijan Järvi, Mei-Ann Chen, Daniel Müller-Schott and Levon Chilingarian. Stern has performed contemporary solo works with the American choreographer Antonia Franceschi performing with AFD Just Dance Company in international dance festivals in Malta and London. Teaching young musicians has always been a part of his mission. In January 2016 he spent three weeks in Venezuela giving masterclasses to young talented cellists throughout the country by an invitation from El Sistema Venezuela and was later invited by Gustavo Dudamel to join his foundation in the Memorial of José Antonio Abreu A MI MAESTRO in Santiago di Chile. Since 2018 he is teaching in a chamber music and masterclass series in Capri Italy.
