The University of Gothenburg has switched to remote studies and temporary remote work

In order to reduce the spread of COVID-19 the Swedish government has advised higher education institutions to switch to remote education. The University of Gothenburg has followed this request and also decided that staff, to the extent possible, temporarily shall work remotely.

The decision which the Vice-Chancellor took on March 17.th 2020 does not mean that the University is closed. In fact, the point is that education, research, cooperation and administration activities will continue. Continued operations of organisationally-critical functions will be ensured to the extent possible.

Remote studies

The decision means that education activities at the University of Gothenburg, to reduce the spread of COVID-19, to the extent possible has switched to remote studies.

The department or course coordinator is responsible for letting you know what this means for your studies.

What this means for students:

  • On-campus teaching has to the extent possible switched to remote studies. Your department will provide further information.
  • Sit-down exams have, to the extent possible, been replaced with a form of examination that does not require physical presence at the University. Your department will provide further information.
  • VFU, internships, external degree projects, and similar educational activities will be carried out in accordance with the host organisation’s guidance.
  • Each department is responsible for assessing whether, exceptionally, any aspect of your studies requires your physical presence. Your department will inform you of any such decision.
  • It is up to each department to work out the necessary changes required. Your department will provide further information.

Remote work

To reduce the spread of COVID-19, the Vice-Chancellor has also decided that University staff shall fully or in part work remotely to the extent possible. Supervisors are responsible for deciding which staff members can work remotely and which, for different reasons, need to work on-site. It is the supervisor who approves remote work.

For staff, including PhD students and supervisors, regarding working remotely:

  • All supervisors must ensure that all their staff who can conduct work remotely, entirely or in part, do so.
  • All staff who work remotely must be available for contact during their usual working hours.
  • All work conducted remotely must be approved by the immediate supervisor.
  • Continued operations of organisationally-critical functions must be ensured to the extent possible. The supervisor judges what aspects are critical.
