Exchange students in Hong Kong are recommended to prepare for going home

News: Nov 13, 2019

The University of Gothenburg recommends its exchange students in Hong Kong to prepare to go home. During Wednesday, the University received information that one of its partner universities has cancelled classes during the rest of the semester because of the turbulent situation.

During the last few days, the instability in Hong Kong has intensified. Violent clashes have occurred, especially nearby the universities. Our partner universities have kept closed during the last few days, and on Wednesday, Chinese University of Hong Kong announced that they had cancelled their classes during the rest of the semester. The Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs have now made an appeal to Swedish exchange students at institutions in Hong Kong to be careful and to follow local news closely.

In the light of this, the University of Gothenburg now recommends its exchange students to prepare to go home. The students have received an email with this information during Wednesday afternoon, they were instructed to reply as soon as possible to confirm that they have received the information.

The students are all covered by the insurance called Student OUT via Kammarkollegiet, and transport home will be organised by Falck Global Assistance. The University of Gothenburg has also initiated discussions with the partner universities to find out how this situation could be managed with regards to potentially late reports of grades, unfinished courses, etc.
