Sea and Society Webinar: Reducing single use plastic consumption with celebrity endorsement

Plastic pollution, which eventually often ends up in the oceans is a challenging problem. Fundamental behavioural changes of consumption and disposal of plastic products and waste are needed. Information and celebrity activists and their endorsement of environmental campaigns may influence such changes.

We evaluate the impact of information and of a celebrity endorsement in a campaign to reduce single-use plastics among university students in two different campuses in Vietnam. Our results indicate that involvement of a celebrity significantly reduced plastic consumption among the students, while information provision on its own had limited impact.

Zihan Nie works with Policy Instruments for Sustainable management of oceans and marine resources with special focus on mitigating marine plastic pollution problems with behavioral economics approaches.

Lecturer: Zihan Nie, postdoc researcher at the Department of Economics, University of Gothenburg.
