CANCELLED: Farmer's incentive's many colours and shapes - Voluntary approaches to reduce nitrogen and pesticide inputs in German drinking water cooperatives

Research profile seminar

In several German Länder, drinking water utilities and farmers enter voluntary agreements aiming to reduce the input of nutrients and plant protection products into surface and ground waters relied on for drinking water provision. The presentation will outline the manifold challenges faced by these cooperative approaches.

In several German Länder, drinking water utilities and farmers enter voluntary agreements aiming to reduce the input of nutrients and plant protection products into surface and ground waters relied on for drinking water provision. The degree to which Länder authorities prescribe certain actions varies strongly, and a very wide array of management approaches, concepts and measures have sprung up in grassroots fashion over the years, each with a different set of pros, cons and quibbles for the actors involved.

The presentation will outline the manifold challenges faced by these cooperative approaches, in which water utilities negotiate more or less directly with the farmers on the best approach to achieve improved water quality. It will also introduce the main management approaches, some of their pros and cons, and highlight aspects of the farming contexts that influence preference for one approach or the other.
