UFSM abraça - volunteering activities contributing for empowerment of minorities

Research profile seminar

On June 2, Alice Kozakevicius from Chalmers will be holding a seminar for GRI.
Zoom link to be announced.

In this lecture, Alice Kozakeviciu will share some experiences with an extension project, called "UFSM abraça" (UFSM embraces), which involves volunteering in public elementary and high schools in ghettos in Santa Maria, southern Brazil. With management and execution supported by undergraduate students from different courses at the Federal University of Santa Maria-UFSM, simple voluntary actions brought community and university closer in favor of improving environmental conditions in schools. As a positive result, participants from the assisted schools and undergraduate courses reported that the entire process helped them regain their self-esteem and motivation.

Lecturer: Alice Kozakevicius received her PhD degree in applied mathematics in 2002 from the University of São Paulo, Brazil. She worked as a Post-Doc scholar in 2005 at the University of Concepción, Chile and at Chalmers University of Technology in 2011. She visited the University of Stuttgart in 2006 as a scholar researcher, working with adaptive wavelet methods for solving hyperbolic PDEs. From October 2010 to September 2018 she worked as Associate Senior Lecturer and then as Full Professor at the Federal University of Santa Maria, UFSM, southen Brazil, teaching mostly numerical calculus, discrete mathematics and topics in wavelets. She is also a member of the thematic committee " Women in Applied and Computational Mathematics" from the Brazilian Society of Applied and Computational Mathematics (SBMAC). Her research interests include signal and image analysis, numerical methods for PDEs and STEM education.
