Forum 7: Reorienting your course towards sustainable development

Workshop

In this workshop, the participants will reflect on selected courses from the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers, and examine to what extent the courses are oriented towards the sustainable development agendas.

The idea of reorienting education towards sustainable development has been running in connection with the UN's initiative of the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) decade, 2004-2014. Following up the decade, the Global Action Programme (GAP) 2014-2019 has been introduced to accelerate and scale-up ESD endeavors towards the Global Goals for sustainable development. As we are in the last year of the GAP, it is important to evaluate and reflect on how education is transformed during this important milestone.

The workshop has a dual purpose. On the one hand, it serves as a start-up initiative to integrating sustainability into courses with no earlier effort to integrate sustainability. On the other hand, it serves to accelerate already existing initiatives to reorient courses towards sustainable development.

The workshop has two parts. It begins with an oral presentation, by professor Arjen Wals, which is meant for providing input and inspiration on the essence of ESD. Arjen Wals will introduce the notion of creating ecologies of learning to engage students meaningfully in issues related to sustainable development. The second part of the workshop is hands-on exercise on selected course syllabus. In this part, volunteer course leaders first briefly present their courses and share how they have been integrating sustainable development into the course. Then, the syllabuses will be discussed in groups followed by reflection from each group. Finally, the workshop will end with the course leader¿s reflection and response on the basis of the group reflection.
