About stone - material, method and jewelry

Lecture

Stone has been Tarja Tuupanens main material as a jewellery artist for 20 years. The relationship to it is so thorough that it becomes more than just a material to begin with. In the lecture she will talk about her approach to different stones - how the character of the material effects the content of the work and what skill means to her.

Part of Tarja Tuupanens practice is working with Hibernate, a group of 4 Finnish jewellery artists. In the lecture, she will talk about how this group operates and how group work can support the individual making.

Tarja Tuupanen has studied jewellery and stonework in Lappeenranta in South Carelia Polytechnic, Finland (BA 1999) and she graduated as MFA from Ädellab, Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, (SE) in 2013.

Since 1997 she has taken part in exhibitions internationally, both in group and solo shows. Teaching and promoting her own professional field have been important for Tuupanen, along with working as an artist.

She was one of the founding members of the Finnish Jewellery Art Association and she acted as the chairwoman in 2005-2013. She has been teaching in Finland and she has also hosted several workshops abroad in different institutions, most recently in China Academy of Arts in Hangzhou. She is a member of Hibernate-group.

The lecture will be held in English.
