OPEN POSITIONS Postdoctoral position in law, especially Ocean Governance Law

The Department of Law is part of the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. Legal education and research have been conducted in Gothenburg since the School was founded in 1923.

The Department has expanded greatly over the last few years and it is steadily growing with new researchers and lecturers joining the staff. Today, there are more than 100 employees, approximately 1,300 undergraduate and graduate students and around 20 doctoral students. The Department of Law is now announcing 1-2 postdoctoral positions in Law, especially Ocean Governance Law, located at the Law Department in Gothenburg.

Description of subject area

During the past few years, the Department of Law at the School of Business, Economics and Law, has established itself as the leading institution in Sweden and a prominent one internationally with respect to research focused on complex, policy relevant legal issues pertaining to use and management of the oceans and their resources.

In order to further strengthen the Ocean Law Group and to provide an early career researcher with the opportunity to further develop her or his research profile within a stimulating academic environment, the Department of Law invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral position focusing on ocean governance law.

For the purpose of this position ocean governance is widely construed, so as to include the regulation of human activities pertaining to or directly affecting the utilisation and long-term management of the oceans and their resources. Examples of relevant issue areas are social, economic and ecological aspects of shipping, utilisation and preservation of marine living resources, management of ecosystems under change, and regulatory challenges relating to the introduction of artificial intelligence in a maritime context.

The Ocean Group aims to promote transdisciplinary cooperation, with the research environment on marine resources at the Department of Economics, School of Business, Economics and Law.

Job assignments

The employment mainly includes research, but up to 20 per cent of the working time may consist of teaching and/or administrative duties.  The candidate is expected to contribute to the research environment independently and in collaboration with other researchers affiliated with the Law Department’s Ocean Group as well as by taking part, as appropriate, in transdisciplinary collaboration. The candidate will be expected to publish high quality research and contribute to the advancement of the academic environment. 

There will be funds available for travel, but the candidate should also seek to attract additional external funding.

Qualifications

An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as post doctor at the University of Gothenburg. However, it is not required that it has been attained at the date of application but at the date of employment. Since a position as post doctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree no older than 3 years counting from last date of application. Leave due to illness, parental leave, and time spent on work for trade unions or student unions may be subtracted when this period is calculated.

The applicant who, in the overall assessment of skills and potential, is deemed to be best suited to carry out the identified job assignments will be selected for the post.

Skills with respect to cooperation with the surrounding community and informing about research nationally and internationally will also be assigned importance. The same applies to a documented interest and ability in collaborating over disciplinary boundaries.

The recruitment process may include interviews and trial lectures.
