OPEN POSITIONS Senior Lecturer in Political Science, one or several

The Department of Political Science has an open climate that encourages involvement in broader societal debates. Research areas of specialisation include elections, democracy, corruption, governance, globalisation, environmental politics and European studies. The Department hosts research programmes such as the QoG Institute, Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem), Centre for Collective Action Research (CeCAR), Governance and Local Development (GLD) and the Swedish National Election Studies Programme. We offer degree programmes at undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral level, as well as freestanding courses. Education is provided in both Swedish and English. We have a total of 1 400 students and a staff of about 140. The Department is centrally located in the city of Gothenburg.

The Department of Political Science is currently hiring one or several senior lecturers in Political Science who are able to contribute to its research and education

Subject area description

Political science is a discipline concerned with the study of politics and involves research and education regarding power, democracy, institutions and political ideas at national and international level.

Job assignments

The position includes teaching, course coordination as well as student supervision and examination at undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral level. Teaching within most of the Department’s courses and programmes may be required. It is required to teach in Swedish at the undergraduate level from the fall semester 2020. Course and programme development assignments as well as participation in the Department’s pedagogical development work is also included.

The position furthermore includes to carry out research and actively apply for external funding of own research and for doctoral students and postdocs. The post also entails active participation in the Department’s research environments and seminar activities, as well as in the international research community through conference participation and publications in international outlets.

The Department of Political Science actively participates in the public debate and the holder(s) of the advertised position(s) will be expected to initiate cooperation and actively cooperate with external actors and the community at large and to promote practical implementation of produced research.

Involvement in leadership, pedagogical and other assignments within the Department’s, Faculty’s and University’s collegial forums may also be included in the longer term.


The qualifications for positions as senior lecturer are given in Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance and in the University of Gothenburg’s own Appointments Procedure.


Teaching skills and scientific/scholarly proficiency will be assigned equal weight in the assessment of applicants.

Scientific/scholarly qualifications will be evaluated based on scholarly publications, ongoing participation in national and international research collaborations as well as documented ability to acquire external research grants. In the assessment of scientific/scholarly qualifications, particular weight will be given to international publications in the last 7 years. Particular weight will be given to high-quality publications by renowned publishers and in international peer-reviewed journals. The quality and impact of the publications will be assigned greater weight than the total number of publications.

Teaching skills will be assessed based on documented experience of having successfully planned and implemented various teaching activities (lectures, seminars, workshops, distance education, student supervision) at undergraduate and Master’s level. Experience of teaching and supervision at the doctoral level will also be considered a merit.

In the assessment of teaching skills, particular weight will be given to implemented and documented efforts of importance for the quality and development of education and/or teaching. Experience of course and/or programme development, authoring of learning material or documented pedagogical development in scientific journals or textbooks is considered a merit. Applicants must have formal training in teaching and learning in higher education or equivalent verifiable qualifications.

Experience of initiating contact and collaborating with and reaching out to external actors and society at large as well as previous leadership experience and/or experience of participation in collegial forums is considered a merit.

The applicant who, in the overall assessment of skills and development potential, is deemed to be best suited to carry out the identified job assignments, cooperate with other staff and contribute to a positive development of the Department’s work will be selected for the post.

Relevant personal circumstances (such as previous time off work and/or studies due to illness, parental leave, military services and trade union or student organization assignments) will be taken into consideration when assessing an applicant’s qualifications and should therefore be backed up with supporting documentation.

Very good knowledge in Swedish (full professional proficiency) is a requirement as the post includes teaching in Swedish in our undergraduate education from fall semester 2020. As the Department operates in an international environment with a great deal of teaching in English, the position requires very strong oral and written English skills.

Applicants should enclose up to 10 scholarly works and up to 3 examples of teaching material and other student learning resources that they would like to be considered, along with an explanation for the selections made.

A brief account of and reflections regarding the applicant’s experience in the areas of research, teaching and interaction with the surrounding society (up to 5 pages).

A description of ongoing and planned research as well as other planned activities of relevance to the advertised position (up to 3 pages). The description must clearly state the extent of previously acquired external research grants.
