OPEN POSITIONS Postdoctoral Fellow in immunology / inflammation

At the Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, research in several different areas are conducted, such as endocrinology, hematology, gastroenterology, hypertension, respiratory medicine and allergology and clinical nutrition. Research is focused on body composition and energy metabolism. Research is conducted in close cooperation with health care at both the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Mölndal hospital.

The research group studies the influence of sex hormones on the immune system during inflammatory conditions caused by autoimmunity, allergy or infections.

Subject area

Immunology / Inflammation

Subject area description

Sex hormones have major effects on the development and function of the immune system, which is illustrated by e.g. the increased risk of development of autoimmune diseases in women and by the sex differences in immune responses to infections. The aim of the research in the group is to identify the immunological mechanisms involved in the effects of estrogen on inflammatory responses, with the overarching goal to improve current treatment strategies to hormone responsive conditions.

Job assignments

The post-doc will work with breeding and characterization of genetically modified mice in order to answer the research questions posed in the projects. Experimental models of allergen- and virus-induced airway inflammation is used to study the effects of estrogen on the immune system during inflammation in these genetically modified mice. One focus area is to study interactions between stromal cells and immune cells in lymph nodes and lung tissue after treatment with estrogen. Besides animal models, also cell isolation and cell culture techniques are used in the projects. Immunological, histological and molecular biology methods for analysis of cells and tissues will be used. The work also includes writing of grant applications and scientific publications, as well as assistance in supervision of PhD students and other students.

To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject. Since postdoctoral constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years from the application deadline.

In assessing the applicants' qualifications, emphasis will be given to previous experience in working with in vivo mouse models of viral infections and inflammation of the lung. Experience in working with experimental mouse models is a requirement. Proficiency in immunological experimental methodology including isolation of immune cells, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry and cell cultures is a merit. Ability of the applicant to independently plan, organize and structure the work is a requirement. The applicant shall be able to independently analyze data and write scientific publications. The applicant shall be able to work independently as well as in a group. Excellent spoken and written scientific English is a requirement. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
