OPEN POSITIONS Operations & Outreach Manager to the V-Dem Institute

The Department of Political Science, University of Gothenburg, is one of the leading Political Science departments in Europe. The vibrant department hosts several large research institutes such as the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem), The Quality of Government (QoG) Institute, the Multidisciplinary Opinion & Democracy Research Group (MOD), the National Election Studies, the Center for Collective Action Research (CeCAR), and the Program on Governance and Local Development (GLD). The department is also leading partner in the SOM Institute. It is a large department with some 140 employees, out of which more than 70 are faculty and researchers, and about 1,400 students.

Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem), headquartered at the V-Dem Institute, is a large-scale research and data collection program offering a new approach to conceptualize and measure democracy. V-Dem collects data on some 450 indicators and supplies over 50 indices related to five main types of democracy from 1789-today. The data is collected through a yearly data collection cycle and by the assistance of more than 3,000 country experts, the resulting database is the largest of its kind with some 27 million observations. The V-Dem Institute is directed by Professor Staffan I Lindberg and Deputy Director Anna Lührmann. In addition to data collection and several research programs, V-Dem collaborates with organizations such as the World Bank, Foreign Ministries, International IDEA, and UNDP, among many others.

V-Dem now seeks a Operations and Outreach Manager. It is a full time (100%) substitute for 12 months starting September 16, 2019, or as agreed. 

The successful candidate takes on the role as Operations and Outreach Manager, which is one of the core functions at the V-Dem institute. By being part of the V-Dem team as well as by attending seminars and international academic conferences, you will be able to stay up to date on the latest research findings and interact with world leading scholars in the field of social science. All V-Dem staff is able to attend trainings relevant to their position and the position may include travels.

Job assignments

The Operations and Outreach Manager is involved in most parts of the V-Dem Institute’s activities. This includes coordinating and working with the annual data collection cycle, which is a key element of the job assignment. In addition, the position also involves working with outreach and communication, website management, organization of conferences and events, as well as general administrative support to the Institute.

The job assignments can be divided into the three main areas:

Annual Data Collection Cycle: Coordination and execution of most parts of V-Dem’s yearly data collection cycle with an emphasis on work with V-Dem’s Country Expert data collection. This includes Country Expert recruitment, communication and support to Country Experts, work with V-Dem surveys, administration of honorariums, among other things.

Outreach: Planning and implementation of outreach strategies and marketing campaigns. This includes work with social media, e-newsletters, website development and management, publication of V-Dem materials, press releases, and communication with various networks.

Conferences and event planning: Organization and execution of internal/external conferences, workshops, meetings and trips.

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Science, communications or similar. An advanced degree in Social Science, communications or similar is meritorious. You need to have experience of coordination in a complex environment including prioritization of tasks with competing deadlines. Experience of working with outreach activities is an advantage, this includes experience of working with marketing, graphic design, website administration, social media, and events planning as well as drafting of high-quality texts targeting practitioner/policy audiences. Skills in using the Office software packages, Adobe Indesign, and/or FileMakerPro are advantages. Previous experience of working in a research project with large-scale data collection processes is meritorious.

To be successful in this position you need to possess very strong planning and organizational skills. You are detail-oriented person with ability to organize and manage multiple projects at a time. You also need to have outstanding communication skills, in both spoken and written English, as this is the working language at the V-Dem Institute. Knowledge of Swedish, Russian, French or Spanish is an advantage. Personal qualities such as social and collaborative skills are of great importance since this is an environment where the work members of the team carry out are closely interlinked.
