The successful applicant will be employed by the Department of Philosophy, Linguistics, and Theory of science (FLoV). The department was founded in 2009, and offers teaching and research in theoretical and practical philosophy, linguistics, and theory of science. The department also hosts several big research programs, including The Gothenburg Responsibility Project, CLASP, and Representation & Reality.

Subject area

Ancient and Medieval Philosophy and Classical Philology

Subject area description

Ancient and Medieval Philosophy and Classical Philology is the scientific study of Greek and Latin literature, of the transmission of this literature, and of its reception in later periods.

Job assignments

The successful candidate will work within the framework of the research project Filling the Gap: Medieval Aristotelian Logic 1240–1360 funded by the Swedish Research Council. The project is an international collaboration between researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Université de Lille and Université de Genève. The overall scope of the project is to analyze the development of Aristotelian logic during the 13th c. and its transition into 14th c. realism. The project has a twofold aim: To produce editions of a number of important, but so far unedited, Latin commentaries on Aristotle’s Topics, Prior Analytics and Sophistical Refutations, and to trace and describe the development of the notions of inference and proof in Aristotelian logic during the period mentioned above.

The successful candidate is expected to produce an edition of Simon of Faversham’s commentary on Aristotle’s Topics. Apart from conducting independent research in areas of relevance to the project, the successful applicant is expected to be actively involved in the research-group's activities, including meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences, as well as to collaborate with the Topica project hosted by the same department (see https://flov.gu.se/english/research/research-programs/topica-project).

Opportunities for teaching may be offered according to the department's needs and the holder's area of expertise, but cannot exceed 20 % of full time. The holder of the appointment is expected to carry out her/his research in Gothenburg. Applicants are expected to be proficient in English as this is the project group's primary language.

Eligibility

A doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Gothenburg. The doctoral thesis should be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since the postdoctoral researcher position is designed to give new PhDs the opportunity to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, priority will be given to those whose doctoral degree was granted within

3 years of the application closing date. Due to parental leave, sick leave or military duty, this period can be extended. Eligibility criteria are described in the Gothenburg University's Appointments procedure for teachers.

Assessment

Scientific proficiency is the most important criterion for assessment, and special attention will be given to the applicant’s PhD thesis and other publications. With reference to the postdoctoral researcher’s specific task in the project, we are especially interested in applicants with a solid training in both philosophy and philology, including textual criticism and editorial technique. Priority will be given to candidates with prior experience of producing a critical edition of an ancient or medieval philosophical work. Documented good interpersonal skills, good skills in terms of planning and organizing research, experience of working in a research team, and good skills in communicating research results is also meritorious. The recruitment process may include interviews (possibly by video link) and contacting references. For more general assessment criteria, cf. the Gothenburg University's Appointments Procedure for Teachers.
