OPEN POSITIONS Postdoctoral fellow in septic arthritis, rheumatology

The Department of Rheumatology and Inflammation Research is located at the Institute of Medicine at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg. It is one of three EULAR Centers of Excellence in Sweden, offering a highly dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment.

The major theme of the research performed at our department is inflammation, including autoimmune, allergic, or infection-induced. The research activities span from fundamental basic research over animal models of disease to clinical research. Within the department there is a mixture of clinical and basic scientists, each with a different expertise. There is a close collaboration between the research department and the rheumatology clinic.

We also offer undergraduate courses for students who study pharmacy, medicine, biology, and medical laboratory science.

At the Department 16 different active research groups that interact and collaborate. We share major equipment and we also have our own animal research facility, which allows all standard techniques and animal experiments to be performed.

Subject area

Septic arthritis, Rheumatology

Subject area description

Septic arthritis, considered to be one of the most aggressive joint diseases, is most commonly caused by S. aureus. Currently, the only available treatment alternatives for septic arthritis consist of antibiotics and drainage of the affected joints. Even after initiating immediate treatment, the joint damage caused by septic arthritis is often irreversible, leading to permanent joint dysfunction for up to half of the patients. So far, it is largely unknown how the joint invasiveness of S. aureus is mediated and what is the inducers of joint destructions in septic arthritis. This project aims on better understanding of S. aureus septic arthritis pathogenesis and provide new conceptions of therapeutic modalities against those difficult situations.
