At the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, at the Sahlgrenska Academy, we conduct research and education covering a wide range of knowledge areas.
The institute comprises five different departments: Clinical Neuroscience, Health and Rehabilitation, Pharmacology, Physiology and Psychiatry and Neurochemistry.

The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology is now recruiting a researcher working with lipid metabolism in infants born extremely preterm. The position is placed at the Göteborg Pediatric Growth Research Center, Sahlgrenska University hospital/Östra. The researcher will be a part of a cross-disciplinary research team focusing on the identification of biomarkers for diagnosing morbidities connected to extremely preterm birth, and to investigate the effect of new treatments in preventing development of morbidities.

The main task for the researcher will be to investigate how supplementation of polyunsaturated fatty acids in extremely preterm infants affects circulating levels these fatty acids, and weather supplementation reduces the prevalence of retinopathy of prematurity and other morbidities connected to extremely preterm birth. Identification of underlying cellular mechanisms due to the supplementation will investigated, including quantification of oxidation products of polyunsaturated fatty acids.

The work involves extraction of lipids and other metabolites from body fluids and tissues and subsequent analysis with gas- and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry and other relevant techniques. The candidate is expected to be able to use and further develop methods currently in use in the laboratory. The candidate is also expected to set up new methods using state-of-the-art techniques and thereby push research forward. Data processing and hypothesis testing using advanced statistical tools will be an integrated part of the work. Results will be prepared for publication in international scientific journals by the candidate.

Work tasks also include planning of future studies and surrounding infrastructure, writing research applications for funding, teaching and supervision of undergrad and doctoral students. The work could also include some travel.

The position as researcher expects the applicant to be a molecular biologist with a Phd degree in a relevant field and extensive experience in laboratory work. Skills and qualifications that are essential for the position are:

  • Documented experience in analysis of fatty acids and polar lipids using GS-MS and LC-MS.
  • Documented experience in adopting and developing methods for analysis of complex lipids.
  • Extensive experience in laboratory work and molecular biology techniques.
  • Documented experience in working with products of enzymatic oxidation of fatty acids.
  • Published in international scientific journals with peer review.
  • Excellent skills in oral and written communication of research in English.

Experience of working with “omics” techniques, such as lipidomics and metabolomics, would be an asset. The candidate should be familiar with complex data analysis and advanced statistics. As supervision of students and teaching will be part of the work, the candidate should have an interest in pedagogy. Therefore, theoretical and practical experiences in pedagogic work are strong merits. Important skills other than essential expertise within the scientific field are ability to work simultaneously with multiple projects and to work independently as well as collaboratively. The candidate should be well structured and able to lead scientific investigations and to raise funding for these activities.

Strong emphasis will be placed on ambition and personal suitability.

The employment is limited 17 months, 100 % of full-time and is placed at The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. Starting date; as soon as possible or as agreed.
