OPEN POSITIONS Associate Senior Lecturer in Business Administration, specialising in maritime logistics and sustainable development

With its more than 3,700 full-time students, 470 employees, 160 international partner universities, its main subject areas – Economics and Law – and four departments, the School of Business, Economics and Law has unique breadth. The School’s close collaborations with the business sector and the public sector are also unique. The School of Business, Economics and Law holds EQUIS, AACSB and AMBA accreditations and is thereby the only Business school in Sweden to hold Triple Crown accreditation.

The Department of Business Administration is the biggest department at the School of Business, Economics and Law, and conducts extensive research and is responsible for education programmes at first-cycle and second-cycle levels, as well as third-cycle education in the subject areas of Business Administration and Economic Geography. The Department has more than 150 employees of which 25 are employed doctoral students, and in addition, the Department is responsible for a large number of externally employed doctoral students and international visiting research fellows. The Department is divided into four sections: Industrial and Financial Management & Logistics (IFEL), Management & Organisation, Marketing, and Accounting.

The advertised position as Associate Senior Lecturer in Business Administration specialising in maritime logistics and sustainable development is hosted by the IFEL section where advanced research and education is conducted within the subject area. The IFEL section participates in research centres such as the Centre for Finance (CFF), Northern Lead and Lighthouse. The section’s staff teach mainly in the Economics programme and the Logistics programme at the School of Business, Economics and Law, as well as the three Master of Science programmes in Accounting and Financial Management, Finance and Logistics and Transport Management.

Subject description

The advertised position is specialised in the subject area maritime logistics and sustainable development with particular focus on sustainability from a climate perspective. The term maritime logistics refers to both maritime transport (i.e., sea freight and ports) and maritime logistics (the flow of goods and the coordination of various functions and actors). The term sustainable development covers both the environmental and social sustainability aspects of maritime logistics. The position is based in Logistics and Transport Economics and it is to the candidate's advantage to also have good knowledge of the related subject areas of intermodal transportation, port logistics, transport policy in general, and maritime policy in particular.

Appointment

Appointment as associate senior lecturer is the first step in a promotion system and constitutes approximately 50% teaching and 50% research. In accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen SFS 1993:100) Chapter 4 Section 12a, an associate senior lecturer may be employed for a period of minimum four years, and at most six years, as decided by the employer prior to the hiring. The purpose of the appointment is to enable the lecturer to develop research autonomy and acquire the research and teaching qualifications necessary to fulfil the requirements for appointment as a senior lecturer. The appointment may be extended for up to a maximum of two years if, due to sick leave, parental leave or other special grounds, additional time is needed to achieve the purpose of the appointment.

This position is a fixed term employment 100 %, up to four years.

Job assignments

Assignments include teaching and research in Business Administration specialising primarily in maritime logistics and sustainable development. The research is expected to correspond to the above subject description. The research will be conducted within the area of specialisation of the associate senior lecturer, and research collaborations with colleagues in the IFEL section at the Department of Business Administration and the rest of the University are encouraged. The associate senior lecturer will be required to teach at first-cycle and second-cycle levels with various specialisations within IFEL section. The associate senior lecturer is also expected to be able to contribute to third-cycle courses and to contract education, as well as to course development and course administration. Teaching in the subject area is conducted in both Swedish and English. The associate senior lecturer may also be expected to teach and supervise in areas of Business Administration outside of the particular subject area of this position.

Eligibility

Eligibility for appointment as associate senior lecturer is specified in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 4a, Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg Ref. V 2018/161, and Appointment Regulations for Teaching Staff at the School Of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg Ref. V 2018/224.

To be eligible for appointment as associate senior lecturer, the candidate must hold a doctoral degree or have equivalent scholarly expertise and also have demonstrated teaching expertise. Preference should be given to candidates who were awarded  their doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence no more than five years prior to the application deadline for this appointment as associate senior lecturer. Those who have completed their doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence prior to five years before the application deadline may also be eligible where special grounds exist, i.e. sick leave, parental leave, or similar circumstances.

Assessment

The assessment criteria for appointment as associate senior lecturer are specified in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 4a, Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg Ref. V 2018/161, and Appointment Regulations for Teaching Staff at the School Of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg Ref. V 2018/224.

The applicant will be chosen who, based on an overall assessment of competence and potential for development, is judged to have the best qualities for performing the duties included in the appointment. For this appointment, the Department is seeking a person with documented experience of teaching and research in Business Administration specialising in maritime logistics and sustainable development in accordance with the subject description above. Equal weight will be given to the candidate’s scholarly and teaching expertise. The associate senior lecturer should have a good ability to teach and administer education programmes. The candidate’s ability to establish and develop research and education collaborations will be taken into account in the assessment. Experience in applying for and obtaining external research funding will be considered an advantage. The candidate’s ability to cooperate internally and externally in order to perform the described tasks, as well as general suitability, will be taken into account in the assessment, as well as the ability to participate in outreach activities and to disseminate information about research and development work nationally and internationally. A strong ability to communicate in English in speech and writing will be necessary for conducting the work tasks. Proficiency in Swedish is not required but will be considered an advantage.

Promotion

The associate senior lecturer employed in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 12a of the Higher Education Ordinance, shall in accordance with Section 12c following application, be promoted to senior lecturer if he/she is assessed to be suitable for the position and eligible for such promotion in accordance with the assessment criteria that the University has determined regarding promotion to senior lecturer. Promotion entails a permanent position as senior lecturer.

According to the Appointment Regulations for Teaching Staff at the School Of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg Ref. V 2018/224 Section 2.3, an application for promotion must be submitted to the Department no later than six months before the expiration of the fixed term employment as associate senior lecturer. At the time of application, the applicant must have achieved, or be close to achieving, the competence required for appointment to associate professor (in Swedish ‘docent’) at the School of Business, Economics and Law. The applicant must demonstrate a clear progression in the acquisition of research qualifications while serving as an associate senior lecturer.
