Subject area

Subject area description

Linguistics is a subject authorised to award qualifications at all levels, including in third-cycle studies. It can be included as a main field of study in Bachelor and Master Degrees.

Linguistics is also included in the Department's Master in Communication specialising in public communication for authorities and Master in Language Technology program.

Linguistic interaction is an overriding theme in research, with a focus on phonetics, psycholinguistics, semantics and pragmatics, and language technology/computational linguistics.

The Centre for Linguistic Theory and Studies in Probability (CLASP) at the Department is funded by a 10 year grant from the Swedish Research Council (2015-2025). CLASP is devoted to research and advanced training in the application of probabilistic modelling and machine learning methods to core issues in linguistic theory and cognition.

Job assignments

We are looking for a linguist who specialises in communication within organisations (such as organisational communication, strategic communication and culture and communication) who can strengthen the Department’s competence in the Communication program specialising in public communication for authorities.

The position involves both teaching and research. The teaching takes place mainly within the Communications program specialising in public communication for authorities at advanced level, but also in linguistics at undergraduate, advanced and postgraduate level. The teaching is mainly conducted in Swedish and for examination at the advanced level at the Faculty of Arts the examiner is usually required to hold a docent qualification.

The successful applicant is expected to conduct research within linguistics, with relevance for the Communications Program. The applicant must, in their application, decide on how their own research can promote and deepen the cooperation with the subject's overall theme (linguistic interaction) as described above.

The holder of the position is expected to be physically present at the Department and regularly participate in its operations. Other tasks may also be required within the context of the employment.

The qualifications for senior lecturer are stated in Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Candidates must have completed their doctoral degree and have pedagogical experiences and skills.

In the assessment of applicants, equal attention will be given to research and teaching expertise. Because teaching is mainly within the Communications Program, which focuses on communication in organisations, research and teaching experience that fits this description is particularly sought. Prior leadership assignments and documented experience of outreach activities and cooperation with the surrounding community will also be considered an advantage.

Assessment grounds for employment as a senior lecturer are stated in Ch. 4, Sec. 4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg’s Appointments Procedure for Teachers, according to which ‘the applicant should be chosen who, based on an overall assessment of competence and potential for development, is judged to have the best qualities for performing the duties included in the appointment.’

In the assessment of research expertise, attention is given to demonstrated ability to lead and develop research and to acquire research funding from both national and international sources, in addition to prior publications in international scholarly journals. We see it as important that the holder of the advertised position is able to contribute to the environment both as a scholar and as a teacher, and has the personal traits necessary to be able to cooperate with others both internally and externally in order to advance the development of the subject area. Documented ability to plan, implement, evaluate and develop relevant teaching activities, including supervision, alone and in cooperation with other teachers, will also be considered an advantage.

Teaching is primarily conducted in Swedish. Good knowledge in Swedish or other Nordic languages, closely related to Swedish, such as Norwegian or Danish, is highly meritorious.

In addition to expert review and references, the assessment process may include trial lectures and interviews.
