Subject area

Specific subject description

Linguistics is a subject authorized to award qualifications at all levels, including in third-cycle studies. It can be included as a main field of study in Bachelor and Master Degrees.

Linguistics is also included in the Department's Master in Language Technology program and Master in Communication specializing in public communication for authorities.

Linguistic interaction is an overriding theme in research, with a focus on phonetics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, semantics and pragmatics, and language technology/computational linguistics.

The Centre for Linguistic Theory and Studies in Probability (CLASP) at the Department is funded by a 10 year grant from the Swedish Research Council (2015-2025).

Job assignments

We are looking for a leading researcher in phonetics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, semantics or pragmatics within the overarching theme linguistic interaction, with an ability to further develop the successful research carried out at the Department, and create a high quality environment for both research and education.

The position is centered on research in the subject area of the post, supervision of doctoral students, and teaching at undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral level. The teaching is primarily conducted in Swedish.

The holder of the position is expected to apply for external research funding, and together with colleagues develop a research environment of the highest international standard at the Department. The holder of the position is expected to be physically present at the Department and regularly participate in its operations.

The eligibility criteria for professorships are provided in Ch.4, Sec 3, of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg’s Appointments Procedure for Teachers.

Eligibility requires prior demonstration of both research and teaching expertise as well as a doctoral degree (or equivalent knowledge and skills) in a discipline of relevance to the advertised position.

The University of Gothenburg’s Appointments Procedure for Teachers states that applicants who lack formal training in teaching and learning in higher education corresponding to at least 15 Swedish higher education credits (equivalent to half a semester of full-time studies), and who are not considered to have acquired equivalent expertise in some other way, must complete such training within one year of employment.

In the assessment of applicants, primary attention will be given to research expertise. Teaching expertise will be given secondary attention. Prior leadership assignments and documented experience of outreach activities and cooperation with the surrounding community will also be considered an advantage. The eligibility criteria for professorships are provided in Ch.4, Sec 3, of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg’s Appointments Procedure for Teachers, according to which ‘the applicant should be chosen who, based on an overall assessment of competence and potential for development, is judged to have the best qualities for performing the duties included in the appointment.’

In the assessment of research expertise, attention is given to demonstrated ability to lead and develop research and to acquire research funding from both national and international sources, in addition to prior publications in international scholarly journals. We see it as important that the holder of the advertised position is able to contribute to the environment both as a scholar and as a teacher, and has the personal traits necessary to be able to cooperate with others both internally and externally in order to advance the development of the subject area. Documented ability to plan, implement, evaluate and develop relevant teaching activities, alone and in cooperation with other teachers, will also be considered an advantage.

Teaching is primarily conducted in Swedish. Good knowledge in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish is highly meritorious.

In addition to expert review and references, the assessment process may include trial lectures and interviews.
