The Valand Academy at the University of Gothenburg and the Hasselblad Foundation have a long-term partnership for the purpose of supporting the development of critical study and research on photography. As part of this shared programme of work, we are now seeking applications from photo-based artists, photo historians, art historians and practioners in cognate disciplines, with doctoral degrees, to apply for a 2-year postdoctoral scholarship starting from January 2019.

This position is attached to a new joint project between the Hasselblad Foundation and the Academy Valand which seeks to create an experimental photo history centered on photographic practitioners in the interwar period (WWI-WWII), starting from (but not limited to) Sweden, in both art and vernacular photography, as well as advertising and scientific photography. The applications for this post may be focused on, for example: new perspectives on archival material; local and social history and photography as alternative historical source and mediation; and cultural parallels between the 20s and 30s and today.

Subject matter



The Academy Valand, Gothenburg (in collaboration with the Hasselblad Foundation)


The employment tasks consist of 80% research and 20% teaching and / or administrative duties. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to contribute to the research and teaching environment at the Valand Academy, as well as to the research and exhibition activities at the Hasselblad Foundation. Postdoctoral scholars are also expected to contribute to the research programme in the field of historical writing in respect of photographic practice and photographic culture, both independently and in collaboration with other researchers linked to the Hasselblad Foundation, the Academy Valand and other departments of the university active in the field of historical writing with respect to photographic practice and photographic culture.


The applicant must have obtained a doctorate in order to be employed as postdoctoral researcher at the University of Gothenburg. The doctoral dissertation should be relevant to the duties attached to this employmet. Since an appointment as a postdoctoral student is designed to provide the recently-completed doctoral graduate with an opportunity to strengthen and develop his / her scientific competence, we are seeking an applicant who has completed the doctorate within the 3 years prior to the closing date of the announcement.

Teaching experience is desirable.

In addition to a relevant Doctoral qualification, bachelor and masters level qualifications in photographic and/ or historical studies are desirable.

This is a full time position and requires daily attendance at Valand Academy during normal working hours, so the successful candidate if not already resident in the Gothenburg region, would be expected to relocate.



The applicant considered - with respect to the overall evaluation of competence, potential, quality of previous research achievement, and the quality of the proposed research - best suited to carrying out the duties, will be awarded the position. In addition to the general research competencies expected of a doctoral graduate, the evaluation process will pay special attention to the following competencies: a practical knowledge of photohistorical methods; experience of exhibition creation; experience in writing research reports; good ability to work both in groups and individually while demonstrating independent initiatives; capacity to initiate and develop cooperation with the surrounding community; practical knowledge of contemporary photography practice and research, both nationally and internationally; artistic / curatorial judgement; communication, planning and practical organizational skills.

The application must contain the following documents:

1. Project description (max 6,000 characters) where the applicant explains how the work is meant to be implemented, and how the applicant intends to work if he / she is offered the position. The project description will cover the theme of experimental history writing and photography in the interwar period.

2. CV including a bibliography and three references that can be contacted by phone or e-mail.

3. Portfolio of previous work, including two examples of works based on research in the relevant field and a short written report, outlining the applicant's research activities.

4. A relevant and recently produced research paper.

5. Certificate of Diploma / Diploma (Attach a copy to the application. Copies can be sent initially, but if the applicant is called an interview, the Earnings must be included at the time of the interview.). All attachments must be clearly labeled with the applicant’s name.

The application may be reviewed by international experts, therefore it is desirable that the application and its attachments be submitted in English.
