OPEN POSITIONS Postdoctor in instrumentation and laser physics

The Department of Physics at the University of Gothenburg is located on the main campus of Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, with a total of some 80 employees. The communication routes are good both nationally and internationally. The researching focuses within the fields of Atom- and Molecular Physics, Condensed Matter Physics and Spintronics, and Complex Systems and Biophysics and is performed in an international environment with extensive national and international collaborations. The education programs at the Department include Bachelor- and Master programs in Physics, physics teacher-training programs, as well as outreach courses in Physics aimed for the general public. Gothenburg Physics Centre is a close collaboration with four other departments within the Faculty of Science and Chalmers University of Technology creates an innovative environment for all researchers and students at the department.

The holder of the announced position will work in the Laser Spectroscopy Research Group in close collaboration with researchers from the applied spinntronics research group. Of particular relevance for the announced position is the newly created laser laboratory "Gothenburg´s Photon Factory", which is equipped with a wide range of different types of continuous, pulsed and tunable lasers.

Job assignments

The work within the framework of this position will mainly consists of research. The main task will be to design and develop laser systems and associated instrumentation for studies of rapid processes in different quantum systems. The experimental system should be designed for studies of spin waves in magnetic materials. This will require close collaboration with researchers from the research group for spintronics. The holder of the position is expected to independently plan and carry out the construction of the experimental facilities and then participate in research projects where the laser systems are used. These experiment should lead to scientific results which will be published in leading international journals.


To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral research fellow a person must have a doctorate, a doctorate in the arts or have attained equivalent scholarly/artistic competence. First of all, that person should be taken into consideration that has obtained a doctorate or has acquired equivalent scholarly/artistic competence at the very latest three years before the conclusion of the application period. The person who has acquired a doctorate earlier may also be given primary consideration if there are special reasons. Special reasons are considered to be a leave of absence due to illness, service in the total defence, commissions of trust within professional and student organisations or parental leave or other similar circumstances.

A requirement for this specific position is a doctor degree in physics, or equivalent degree, within a subject relevant to topic of the research to be conducted. In addition, it is required that the candidate has demonstrated independent work in construction of advanced scientific instruments and that the candidate has extensive experimental experience in the fields of laser physics, mechanical design, Ultrahigh vacuum technology and UV-spectroscopy.


The assessment will be based partly on scientific publications and partly on the applicant's combined knowledge and experience in the following subjects: pulsed lasers, electrical and magnetic measurement technology, ultrahigh vacuum technology, data acquisition and data analysis, UV spectroscopy and programming (in particular AutoCAD, LabView and MATLAB).

The project requires an enthusiastic and creative person with passion and curiosity for science with the ability to collaborate. We are looking for a person with a documented ability to work independently and systematically with large projects. Good knowledge in English, oral and written, is a requirement.
