Job assignments

One appointment for 100% time as a research assistant to Professor Randi Hjalmarsson. The primary task of the research assistant will be to input and code data from archival records from 19th century London, the purpose of which is to study the effect of the introduction of the first police force in the world, the Metropolitan Police, on crime. Most of this data set creation will be done manually in Excel, but the research assistant will also work in Stata to further code, clean, and analyze the data. The research assistant will also be expected to work on data related coding and cleaning for other research projects, including a large data set of cases in the Virginia Court system aimed at studying racial biases. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals considering obtaining a PhD in economics to gain data skills and an overview of the research process.

Qualifications

The successful applicant must hold a master’s degree in economics, and be fluent in English. (Given that much of the task is to transcribe hand-written English historical documents and American data, preference will be given to candidates with very good knowledge in English.)
