OPEN POSITIONS Postdoctoral Researcher in Logic

The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 37 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programs attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. The successful applicant will be employed by the Department of Philosophy, Linguistics, and Theory of science (FloV). The department was founded in 2009, and offers teaching and research in theoretical and practical philosophy, linguistics, and theory of science. The department also hosts several big research programs, including The Gothenburg Responsibility Project, CLASP, and Representation & Reality.

Subject area

Logic

Specific subject description

The successful applicant will be employed on the project Reflection and Truth, financed by Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and the University of Gothenburg, and led by Graham Emil Leigh. This project investigates the philosophical, mathematical and computational properties of reflection principles and formal truth through a cross-disciplinary research team. Current foci of the project include proof-theoretic studies of reflection principles, axiomatic theories of truth, type-theoretic foundations, and fixed-point calculi such as the modal mu-calculus.

Job assignments

The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the aims and objectives of the project. We are especially interested in applicants able to strengthen the existing research group through independent and collaborative research on the mathematical study of reflection and induction and its links to the concepts of truth, proof and computation.

Apart from conducting independent research in areas of relevance to the project, the successful applicant is expected to be actively involved in the research-group's activities, including meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences; both as organizer and as participant, and to help in the writing of future research funding applications. Co-authoring of papers with other members of the research group is strongly encouraged.

Opportunities for teaching may be offered according to the department's needs and the holder's area of expertise, but cannot exceed 20 % of full time. The holder of the appointment is expected to carry out her/his research in Gothenburg. Applicants are expected to be proficient in English as this is the project group's primary language.

Eligibility

A doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as a post doctoral researcher at the University of Gothenburg. The doctoral thesis should be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since the post doctoral researcher position is designed to give new PhDs the opportunity to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, priority will be given to those whose doctoral degree was granted within 3 years of the application closing date. Due to parental leave, sick leave or military duty, this period can be extended. Eligibility criteria are described in the Gothenburg University's Appointments procedure for teachers.

Assessment

Scientific proficiency is the most important criterion for assessment, and special attention will be given to the applicant’s PhD thesis and other publications, and to her/his research plan. Priority will be given to applicants whose research plan and prior work strengthen the research group and the project overall. Documented good interpersonal skills, good skills in terms of planning and organizing research, experience of working in a research team, and good skills in communicating research results is also meritorious.  The recruitment process may include interviews (possibly by video link) and contacting references. For more general assessment criteria, cf. the Gothenburg University's Appointments Procedure for Teachers.

The following documents should be attached to the application (in pdf):

1. A research proposal: The applicant must attach a proposal of at most 2500 words to the application, detailing the research she/he plans to conduct in the project. The proposal should include a discussion of how the applicant’s research will contribute to the research objectives of the project.

2. A PhD certificate.

3. A CV listing academic degrees, employments, publications, and other relevant merits.

4. At most three scientific publications, and the applicant’s PhD thesis.

5. Contact information for two academics familiar with the research work of the applicant.
