OPEN POSITIONS Associate senior lecturer in experimental spintronics

The Department of Physics at the University of Gothenburg is located on the main campus of Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, with a total of some 80 employees. The communication routes are good both nationally and internationally. The researching focuses within the fields of Atom- and Molecular Physics, Condensed Matter Physics and Spintronics, and Complex Systems and Biophysics and is performed in an international environment with extensive national and international collaborations. The education programs at the Department include Bachelor- and Master programs in Physics, physics teacher-training programs, as well as outreach courses in Physics aimed for the general public. Gothenburg Physics Centre is a close collaboration with four other departments within the Faculty of Science and Chalmers University of Technology creates an innovative environment for all researchers and students at the department.

 

Spintronics is one of the most successful fields of research at the department with particular focus on magnetodynamic phenomena in thin films and spintronic components. These are studied by magnetic, electric and optical methods, and modelled by GPU-accelerated micromagnetic simulations. The department now seeks a tenure track assistant professor in experimental spintronics to carry out research and teaching in the subject.

Subject description

The department recruits an Associate senior lecturer in experimental spintronics.

The research within the position should complete and strengthen existing activites at the department. This implies that the research in spintronics should take advantage of ongoing activities (http://www.akermanlab.com/research.html) and existing infrastructure (http://www.akermanlab.com/tools.html), complementing these with new projects and suggestions for further infrastructure. The spintronics group pursues an internationally very active and successful research. The department has recently invested in new infrastructure for deposition of thin magnetic films, a new BLS-microscope to study spin waves, and a GPU-based cluster for micromagnetic simulations to interpret the experimental results by the best possible modelling. The activites are co-localized with the research groups in nanoplasmonics and atomic and molecular physics of the department and with one of the best clean rooms of the world (at the department of microtechnology and nanoscience at Chalmers University of Technology). Altogether this gives excellent access to a wide array of equipment in modern premises.

 

Job assignment

The main tasks are research and teaching.

The research includes seeking funding from external national and international sources to build and lead a research group with an independent research program in spintronics. It is also important to develop existing or new international research networks within the framework of the employment.

The tasks also include planning and carrying out teaching at all levels of education. In addition to lectures and exercises, examinations and laboratory work are often included in the teaching. The assignments also include supervising degree projects at the undergraduate and advanced levels, as well as doctoral students in postgraduate education.

Furthermore, the candidate is expected to participate in the institution's activities, for example through administrative assignments, and to interact with the surrounding society, both in collaborative projects and in popular science activities.

 

A candidate who does not yet have taken courses in higher education may undergo this within two years from access to the employment. The university offers higher education courses.

 

The candidate is expected to be able to understand and communicate in Swedish within two years. The university offers courses in Swedish.

 

Eligibility

The general qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg. A PhD degree or equivalent foreign degree in a subject area relevant to the position is a requirement. In addition, the ability to teach in Swedish or English is a requirement.

 

Qualifications

In the assessment of applications, scientific and pedagogical merits will be assessed with the same care. The scientific merits will be assigned a greater weight than the pedagogical in the final assessment.

When assessing scientific skill, special attention is given to the competence in spintronics with a focus on electrical generation of spin waves in ferromagnetic materials, studies of such spin waves both with electrical and optical measuring methods, and microwave components based on these phenomena. Great emphasis will be placed on applicants' ability for clean room work and experience in design and processing of spintronic components. The skill is assessed through publications in international journals with peer-review and bibliometrics (number of citation and h-index). Quality should be given greater weight than the total production of scientific articles.

When assessing pedagogical skill, special attention is given to the capacity to plan, conduct and lead teaching and course development. A great importance will be given to the ability for pedagical renewal and development of teaching at introductory and advanced level. A well developed philosophy of teaching and a documented proficiency to advise undergraduate and graduate students is desirable.

In the second instance, the applications are assessed on the basis of experience of and ability to collaborate with authorities, business and other stakeholders. Good communication and collaboration skills are strong merits. Leadership experience is also counted as a strong merit for the employment.

In the case of teacher employment, the applicant shall be chosen who, after an overall assessment of skill, development potential and suitability, is deemed to have the best conditions for carrying out the tasks that are included in the employment, interact with other staff and contribute to a positive development of the activities at the department. The weighted assessment will also include how the applicant's credentials and plans complement and strengthen the business in accordance with the institution's strategy.

Promotion from Associate senior lecturer to Associate lecturer in experimental spintronics

The tenure track assistant professor may during the employment, but not later than 5 months before its termination, apply for promotion to a permanent position as associate professor. Pedagogical and scientific merits will be judged on a scale with 5 different levels, where the candidate should receive the grades 5 outstanding or 4 excellent. The candidate will also be assessed against the eligibility criteria below. If these are fulfilled and the candidate is judged to be suitable, promotion will be granted.

To be eligible for employment as associate professor, the candidate should have

  • a docent degree in the field.
  • training in higher education pedagogics including supervision corresponding to 20 credits (the courses HPE101, HPE102, HPE103 and HPE201 or equivalent).
  • Excellent knowledge of written and oral English.
  • Good knowledge of written and oral Swedish.
  • Good ability to cooperate, independence and initiative.
  • Ability to actively, independently and successfully apply for and obtain external funding.
  • Ability to supervise and assist students at different levels.

Employment Procedure

The assessment process will include statements from external experts, interviews and test lectures. The assessment of qualifications and experience will take into account parental leave, sick leave or other similar circumstances.
